CORBAN 57, MULTNOMAH 42: Warriors Pull Away from Persistent Lions in 4th Quarter

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – A 12-2 run to open the fourth quarter, half of the points on free throws, enabled the Corban University Warriors to pull away from the pesky Multnomah University Lions, who dogged the heels of the visitors for three periods, for a 57-42 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's basketball victory Saturday evening here at Lytle Gym.

Multnomah led only once in the game, taking a 3-2 lead on a three-pointer by Bethany George, and managed a 5-5 tie on a layup by George shortly thereafter.  A layup by Corban's Emily Yost broke the tie at the 8:13 mark of the opening period and the Warriors never trailed again, but the Lions would not go away.  Although the Lions struggled most of the game to find their offense, their defense kept them close as they made 13 steals and forced the Warriors into 23 turnovers.

Corban held a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.  A three by Maci Bozett gave the Warriors their largest lead of the first half at 25-13 with 4:40 to go, but the Lions clipped the deficit to 27-20 at the break with a closing 7-2 run.  The Lions were still within striking distance heading into the final period, down only 38-30, but shot only .222 (4-18) in the last 10 minutes while the Warriors hit .500 (5-10) to take control.  A layup by Shaelie Burgess made it 50-32 Corban with 5:32 left and essentially iced the game.

--- By the Numbers:  Faith Kraatz and Rachelle Tau paced the Lions with 12 points apiece, Kraatz making it a double-double with 10 rebounds along with a game-high five steals and a pair of blocked shots.  George and Valerie Wakefield handed out four assists apiece.  The Lions shot .235 (16-68) for the game and committed only nine turnovers, their best ball-control game of the season.

Bozett topped Corban with 13 points, while Yost turned in a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds, leading the Warriors to a 52-34 margin on the boards.  Corban finished with a .438 shooting percentage (21-48).  Treasure Farmer handed out five assists, and Burgess blocked three shots.

Multnomah is now 0-17 on the season and 0-7 in the conference, while Corban improved to 9-7 overall and 5-4 in the CCC.

--- Quoting MU coach Tim Bieri:  ""I am very pleased with our overall effort tonight.  The ladies did absolutely everything we asked them to do tonight – especially defensively.  We have put together two strong defensive performances this weekend.  Unfortunately we have really struggled to score the ball all year, and tonight was another struggle.  This was one of our best offensive performances in terms of execution and taking care of the ball.  Only having nine turnovers is a victory in many ways – we simply need to find a way to get the ball to go through that steel circle more often."

--- Next: Multnomah visits league-leading and 8th-ranked Eastern Oregon University Friday for a 5:30 p.m. contest … Corban hosts the Oregon Institute of Technology Friday at 5:30 p.m. in a CCC game … Both will be followed by CCC men's games at 7:30 p.m.
