ASHLAND, Ore. - Despite trailing by just a four-point margin heading into the halftime break, Multnomah was unable to complete the upset against the regular season champion Southern Oregon University Raiders, as the Lions suffered an 87-65 defeat in their final game in program history.
"This season has been a journey filled with moments we couldn't have ever expected to overcome, that's for sure," shared head coach Reid Takatsuka. "Despite all of the results this year, I really couldn't be any prouder of this group of girls. They could have easily thrown in the towel earlier in the season, but they persevered and made it to the end. I'm lucky to have been a part of Multnomah's history, and I know each of these girls are capable of going on to do great things."
The hosts did well to contain the conference's leading scorer,
Jersey Huerta, with the freshman guard scoring just five points throughout the first and second quarter. Physicality was the name of the game during Saturday's contest, with the Raiders outrebounding the Lions 43-22. SOU also did well to capitalize on Multnomah's mistakes throughout the duration of the contest, scoring 26 points off of Multnomah's 18 turnovers.
Ellie Robertson led the charge for the Lions, matching her career-high with 21 points on the night.
Makayla Torkornoo ended the contest with 19 points and a team-high four rebounds, while Huerta chipped in with 11 points, five assists and three rebounds. Senior forward
Gracie Browning rounded out the scoring for the Lions with 10 points, as well as a team-high six assists.
Multnomah ends their last season in program history with a 7-21 record on the year and a 5-17 record in CCC play. Huerta, in just her first year of collegiate basketball, led the conference in scoring during the regular season, averaging 19.4 points per game. The Kent, Washington native also ended the year with the second highest free throw percentage in the conference (86.5%). Torkornoo made her mark on the CCC in her first and only season as a Lion, as she led the conference in 3-point field goals made per game (2.7). Browning, a two-year member of the Multnomah Women's Basketball team, ended the year as the fifth-best defensive rebounder in the CCC (5.8/game).
