Box Score WALLA WALLA, Wash. – With
Patty Batoon and
Maile Kam collecting 17 kills apiece, the Multnomah University Lions picked up their first Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball win of the season 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18) over the host Walla Walla University Wolves Thursday night here at Windemuth Court.
It was the second straight win and the first of three league games in three nights in three different states for the Lions (2-6, CCC 1-3). The Wolves (1-6, CCC 0-3) dropped their third in a row.
Multnomah jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led by as many as 13 points at 19-6 in cruising to the first-set win. The Lions hit .275 in the set while holding the Wolves to a .024 percentage.
The second set was closely-contested as neither team held more than a four-point lead. Walla Walla closed the set with a 7-2 run to overcome a late Lions' lead.
The Lions hit a sizzling .424 in the third set, with 15 kills and only one error. Batoon's kill broke an 11-11 tie and ignited a 6-0 run that gave the Lions control, and they ended the set on a block by
Marissa Rhodes and
Hannah Snyder.
Multnomah never trailed in the fourth set and steadily pulled away, eventually building an 18-10 lead. The Wolves got no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Kam hit a blistering .515 (17-0-33) in leading the Lions to their best hitting percentage of the season at .226 (56-18-168). Snyder hit .313 (9-3-19) and contributed four blocks (two solo, two assists). Rhodes passed out 39 assists, while on defense,
Sabrina DeJesus-Bair made 30 digs,
Miranda Halverson 12, and Kam and
Emily Weidlich 11 each.
Lauren Barlow was the only Wolf in double figures with 15 kills and added a team-high 25 digs. Lauren Bosler had 22 assists and 16 digs, and Nilah Mata'afa added 19 digs. Walla Walla hit .065 (45-34-168) as a team.
Quoting Coach Jenna Bouey: "Kam, Batoon and Snyder were on fire tonight at the net. Sabrina picked everything up that was near her, and passed well too on serve receive. It was a great game for the girls, and we're planning on building on that tomorrow night."
