Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – After a rousing second-set win that evened their match with Warner Pacific College at a set apiece, the Multnomah University Lions surrendered the first eight points of the third set and never regained momentum in a 3-1 loss (25-22, 17-25, 25-8, 25-16) to the host Knights in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match Wednesday night here at C.C. Perry Gym.
--- The Story: Multnomah used a 10-2 run, capped by consecutive kills by
Patty Batoon, to take a 14-8 lead in the opening set, but Warner then went on a 12-3 run of its own, led by three winners from Jenna Mast, to forge ahead 21-17. Mast added two more kills as the Knights went on to a 25-22 win.
Three kills by
Miranda Halverson and two by Batoon sparked an 8-1 outburst by the Lions in the second set that lifted them from a slim 10-9 lead to an 18-10 margin. The teams split the rest of the points, another Halverson winner ending the set and evening the match.
The tide turned at the outset of the third stanza as the Knights, behind the service of Kealia Rosa, captured the first eight points. The Lions four times got within five points, the last at 11-6, but the Knights reeled off 12 unanswered points, half of them on kills by Mast, to effectively put the set away.
Two kills by Mast broke a 4-4 tie in the fourth set and started a 5-0 run that gave Warner Pacific a 9-4 lead. The hosts maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way, eventually pushing their largest lead out to nine points at 25-16 – the final score.
--- By the Numbers: Batoon had 12 kills and Halverson 11 with a .333 hitting percentage to lead the Lions, while
Marissa Rhodes handed out 35 assists.
Sabrina DeJesus-Bair made 13 digs and
Emily Weidlich 11, with
Sydney Amundsen in on three blocks. Multnomah hit . 121 as a team (35-20-124).
Mast finished with 23 kills and a .320 hitting percentage while Lauren Tennyson added 10 kills for the Knights. Rosa passed out 38 assists. Tennyson had 19 digs, Meghan Turner 18, and Rosa 11, with Lauren Jones contributing five blocks. Warner Pacific's hitting mark was .220 (51-22-132).
Multnomah fell to 2-11 overall and 1-7 in the conference, while Warner Pacific improved to 4-4, all in the CCC.
