SOUTHERN OREGON 3, MULTNOMAH 0: Raiders Rally, Use Long Runs to Defeat Lions

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore.  – Visiting Southern Oregon University rallied from a five-point deficit in the first set, then used long runs in the second and third sets to give the Raiders a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-16, 25-18) over the Multnomah University Lions in Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball action Friday night here at Lytle Gym.

A 4-0 run, sparked by a pair of kills by Patty Batoon and a service ace by Marissa Rhodes, gave Multnomah a 15-10 lead in the opening set, but SOU battled back to tie it 17-17 on a block by Taylor Ristvedt and Makayla Hoyt.  There were three more ties thereafter, the last at 22-22, before kills by Dani Johnson, Ristvedt, and Elliott Cook secured the set for the Raiders.

In the second set, a pair of 5-0 runs enabled the Raiders to take control.  The first gave them a 5-2 lead, and the second extended the margin to 22-12.  In the final set, a 6-0 run put the game away as SOU moved from a slim 14-11 lead to a 20-11 bulge before Johnson ended the match with a kill.

Batoon led the Lions with 12 kills, while Rhodes handed out 22 assists.  Sabrina DeJesus-Bair had a match-high 15 digs, and Sydney Amundsen, Madison Schuh, and Maile Kam had two blocks each.

Southern Oregon was led by Johnson with eight kills while hitting .206 as a team, while Hannah Bogatin had 16 assists and Natalie James 15.  Ashlyn Flynn made nine digs, and Cook posted six blocks.

Multnomah fell to 2-10 overall and 1-6 in the conference, while Southern Oregon improved to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the CCC.

Quoting Coach Jenna Bouey:  "Southern played well and stayed consistent the whole way through.  We had moments of greatness, but couldn't get over the hump to finish the close games.  We believe that, once we're able to do that, things will start turning around for this team."
