SOUTHERN OREGON 90, MULTNOMAH 39: Lions End ‘17 with Loss to 11th-Ranked Raiders

Box Score ASHLAND, Ore. – Bringing the 2017 portion of their women's basketball schedule to a close, the Multnomah University Lions dropped a 90-39 decision to the Southern Oregon University Raiders, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Division II, in Cascade Collegiate Conference action Saturday evening here at Mountain Avenue Gym. 
 
Southern Oregon jumped out to a 20-0 lead, with Ariel Augustine scoring six of the Raiders' first eight points, and never trailed.  Valerie Wakefield put Multnomah on the board with a pair of free throws with 1:23 left in the first quarter and Rachelle Tau scored the Lions' first field goal 27 seconds later, but a Sophia Altemus three-pointer gave the Raiders a 23-4 lead at the end of the period.  A 20-12 advantage in the second quarter gave SOU a 43-16 halftime lead.
 
Southern Oregon led 63-24 going into the fourth quarter, which turned out to be the highest-scoring period for both teams.  The Raiders shot .647 (11-17) in the final 10 minutes while scoring 27 points, while the Lions shot .333 (6-18) and made all three of their three-pointers in the game for 15 points. 
 
--- By the Numbers:  Wakefield scored 12 points and Tau finished with 10 for the Lions, who were held to a .280 shooting mark (14-50).  The Lions were victimized by a 60-35 deficit on the boards and 31 turnovers to only 12 for the Raiders.  Paris Sanders grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, Wakefield handed out four assists, and Anissa Behymer-Smith had two steals.
 
Augustine led a quintet of Raiders in double figures with 15 points.  Altemus added 13 points, while Toria Bradford, Remi Mejia and Syd'Nee Fryer scored 11 apiece.  SOU shot .375 from the field (33-88).  Fryer made it a double-double game with 13 rebounds, Bradford and Mejia had six assists each, and Kenadee Honaker made seven steals. 
 
Multnomah falls to 0-15 on the season and 0-5 in the conference, while Southern Oregon is now 13-1 overall and 5-1 in the CCC.
