NORTHWEST 3, MULTNOMAH 0: Season Closes for Lions with Home Setback to Eagles

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Out-hit .326 to .040 on the night, the Multnomah University Lions saw their 2017 women's volleyball season come to an end with a 3-0 home loss (25-17, 25-15, 25-12) to the NAIA's 21st-ranked Northwest University (Wash.) Eagles late Saturday afternoon here at Lytle Gym.
 
Northwest used a 5-0 run early in the first set to take a quick 10-3 lead, but the Lions slowly clawed their way back, cutting the deficit to just 15-13 on a solo block by Maile Kam.  A pair of kills by Audrey Saelens and two Multnomah attack errors boosted the Eagles' lead back to six at 19-13, however, and they completed the opening set with a winner by Sarah Warner.
 
After the Lions took a 1-0 lead on an attack errors by Northwest to open the second set, the Eagles asserted themselves with a 6-0 run that featured a trio of combo blocks by Saelens and Hannah Lord.  Another run of 5-0 boosted the Eagles' lead to 17-7, and a kill by Amanda Waterman concluded the set.
 
Multnomah hung around in the third set and was only down 9-7 following a Patty Batoon kill, but Northwest salted the set and the match away with an 8-0 outburst that made it 17-7.  Mattie Jo Johnson contributed two kills and two blocks in the run, and Waterman had back-to-back kills for the final two points of the match.
 
--- By the Numbers:  Miranda Halverson had eight kills for the Lions, who made 23 kills but 19 errors (10 of them on blocks by Northwest) in 101 attempts.  Marissa Rhodes passed out 14 assists and Kayla Keane had eight.  Sabrina DeJesus-Bair made 13 digs, and Madysen Trout was in on four blocks.
 
Northwest, which had 38 kills and only 10 errors in 86 attacks, was led by Saelens, who had nine kills and also posted eight block assists.  Morgan Pilon handed out 28 assists, and Alysanne Van Dyke made 20 digs.
 
Multnomah finished with an 8-21 overall record and was 10th in the conference at 3-17.  Northwest heads into the CCC Tournament with a 21-7 overall and 15-5 league mark, which put them in a second-place tie in the final standings.
 
--- Notes: The Lions honored their two graduating seniors, Batoon and Keane, in pre-game ceremonies on Senior Night.
 
--- Next:  Multnomah turns its eye toward the 2018 season … Northwest will play in the CCC Tournament, which features first-round on-campus sites on Tuesday, followed by the semi-finals and finals on Friday and Saturday at the home of the top seed.
