Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – An 18-0 run over a five-minute span covering the first and second quarters enabled Concordia University-Portland to pull away from Multnomah University and the host Cavaliers went on to an 83-36 win over the Lions in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday evening here at LCEF Court.
Multnomah scored the first point of the game on a free throw by
Tiara Chinn 37 seconds in, but that was the only lead the Lions would have. A jumper by Iraide Juarez a minute later put Concordia ahead for good, but the Lions hung around and trailed only 15-9 following a three-pointer by
Marquel Greene at the 3:03 mark.
Back-to-back threes by Kizzah Maltezo ignited Concordia's game-deciding run. Thirteen straight points gave the Cavs a 28-9 lead at the end of the first, and Danielle Hartzog scored five points to open the second, making it 33-9 with 8:15 to go.
Bethany George ended the run with a trey for the Lions, but that 33-12 score at 7:35 in the second quarter was as close as Multnomah would get again. The final score was the largest margin of the game.
--- By the Numbers: George was the only Lion in double figures with 12 points;
Rachelle Tau was next with nine. The Lions were held to a .211 shooting percentage (12-57), their lowest of the season, by the NCAA Division II Cavaliers.
Paris Sanders grabbed eight rebounds as the Lions held their own on the boards, trailing only 43-39.
Valerie Wakefield and
Erin Estabrook had two assists apiece.
Hartzog led a balanced attack with 15 points as all 11 players for Concordia scored. Bailey Cartwright posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and also picked up six steals as the Cavs forced 28 Multnomah turnovers. Maltezo, Keesha Sarman and Abby Aplace had four assists each.
Multnomah is now 0-7 on the season, while Concordia improved to 4-2.
--- Quoting coach Tim Bieri: "Concordia has a strong team and is very well coached, so we learned a lot and got another good picture of where we can get to. Our post players had some solid play on both ends and we had some flashes of good inside-out play. Obviously with 28 turnovers and 40 points for CU because of those turnovers, it's very difficult to stay in a game that way. That being said, as we rectify our turnover problem, the game will smooth out for us."
