Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Outside hitters
Maile Kam and
Miranda Halverson combined for 41 kills, leading the Multnomah University Lions to a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20) over the visiting George Fox University Bruins in their final non-conference volleyball match of the season Friday night here at Lytle Gym.
The opening set could not have been much tighter as there were 11 ties and five lead changes, with neither team holding more than a three-point lead. George Fox broke an 18-18 tie on a Multnomah attack error and two service aces by Sophia Lawrence, and Delaney Cruz delivered two kills for the Bruins' final two points.
Multnomah jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set behind aces from
Marissa Rhodes and Halverson, a block by Halverson and
Sydney Amundsen, and one kill each by Kam and
Madison Schuh. The Lions eventually held a six-point lead on three occasions, the last at 21-15 following a Halverson winner. Halverson also contributed winners on two of the final three points as the Lions evened the match.
The Lions took a quick 4-0 lead in the third set behind kills from Amundsen and Halverson sandwiched around two Bruin attack errors. The margin eventually reached seven at 11-4 and 12-5, and the Lions remained in control the rest of the way.
Although they never trailed in the final set, the Lions could not shake the Bruins until late in the set. With the game knotted at 18-18, Halverson put Multnomah ahead for good with a kill, and Kam added two winners in the Lions' final three points to close out the match.
--- By the Numbers: Kam had 21 kills, Halverson 20, and the two combined to hit .378 (41-7-90) in leading the Lions to a .262 team hitting mark (56-17-149). Rhodes handed out 40 assists and
Kayla Keane 10.
Sabrina DeJesus-Bair, the reigning Cascade Collegiate Conference Defender of the Week, had 21 digs, and Halverson added 17. Amundsen, Halverson, Schuh and
Hannah Snyder were in on three blocks each.
George Fox got 14 kills from Liv Alexander and 12 from Cruz, while Madison Ross had 26 assists and Laney Search 16. Lawrence had a match-high 27 digs and Search had 11.
Multnomah is now 7-16 on the season, while George Fox fell to 6-8.
