LINFIELD 1, MULTNOMAH 0: Lions Bitten by Visiting Wildcats on Late Penalty Kick

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – A penalty kick score by Linfield College's Isaias Flores with 1:10 left in the game gave the visiting Wildcats a stunning 1-0 men's soccer victory over Multnomah University in the Lions' soccer home opener Friday night at Delta Park.

The match was a defensive struggle all night long, Linfield taking 16 total shots to eight for Multnomah, with six on goal to the Lions' two.  Multnomah's Manuel Guillermo-Olivares kept his team in the game with five saves in the net, including two spectacular punches over the crossbar that had "Goal!" written all over them.

With overtime looming, an inadvertent hand ball inside the box was called on the Lions, giving Flores an opportunity for an uncontested kick.  Guillermo-Olivares anticipated the shot and dove to his left, but the ball barely eluded his reach and snuck inside the far post for the winning score.

Noe Favila led the Lions on the attack with four shots on goal, while Flores topped the Wildcats with six attempts and Ryan Kister had four.

Both teams are now 2-1 on the young season.

Quoting Coach Tom Stephens: "It was a tough way for our guys to lose a game, on a judgment call in the final minute … Our defense played well all night; Manny especially had some outstanding saves … Offensively, we made some adjustments in the second half and got a lot more quality opportunities that we just couldn't cash in … I am very proud of the way we played and think we can take a lot of positives from this game going forward."

Next: Multnomah plays a second straight game against a Northwest Conference opponent when the Lions visit Pacific University (Ore.) Saturday at 7:00 p.m. … Linfield takes on its fourth straight Cascade Collegiate Conference foe Sunday, hosting Corban University at 6:00 pm.
