Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Two goals in the last 20 minutes enabled the visiting Carroll College (Mont.) Saints to overcome the Multnomah University Lions, who were played short-handed due to injuries and a red-card ejection, for a 2-1 Cascade Collegiate Conference victory Friday afternoon here at smoke-shrouded Delta Park.
After a fierce first-half battle that ended in a scoreless deadlock despite several good scoring opportunities for both teams, the Lions finally broke through in the 61
st minute as
Zack Woods sent a through ball to
Nicolas Mboungou, who converted to the far post for a 1-0 lead. Jose Porras tied the game for the Saints when he took a cross from Nick Lowrimore and sent it toward the goal, deflecting off a Multnomah defender as it went into the net in the 70
th minute.
Carroll netted the game-winner in the 82
nd minute as Lowrimore again assisted on the score, this time to Rodrigo Portillo. Multnomah had a chance to tie it with a corner kick chance in the waning moments, but a last-minute shot by
Zack Woods was turned away by Carroll keeper Dominique Beauboeuf, who recorded five saves.
Manuel Guillermo-Olivares had six saves to keep the Lions in the contest.
Carroll, taking advantage of Multnomah having only 10 men on the field after a red-card disqualification in the 42
nd minute, aggressively attacked and took 28 shots, eight on goal, to 10 shots, six on target, for the Lions. Porras had nine shots and Jose Mena five for Carroll, while Mboungou led the Lions with three attempts.
Multnomah is now 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the CCC, while Carroll improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Quoting Coach Tom Stephens: "Coming off a tough loss yesterday and playing against a good team that had won by nine goals the day before, our team really stepped up today. With two key starters out with injuries, including our top offensive threat, losing another player in this game to a broken arm, and then having to play a man down due to a questionable red card, our players responded with heart and didn't back down. Our bench gave us some great performances when they came in. I could not be more proud of these young men and the effort they gave, and I think that points to us heading in the right direction."
