PACIFIC (ORE.) 3, MULTNOMAH 1: Lions Close Non-Conference Play with Loss to Boxers

Box Score FOREST GROVE, Ore. – A goal by Jose De La Torre in the first minute of the game gave Multnomah University a quick lead, but the Pacific University (Ore.) Boxers rallied to take a 3-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over the visiting Lions Saturday night here at Ledbetter Field.

De La Torre's score, a shot from 20 yards out inside the far post, came 46 seconds into the contest, and was assisted by Noe Favila.  The Boxers tied it in the fifth minute when Weli Alamillo tapped the ball in off a cross from Diego Lopes, and there the score stood at halftime.

Matt Kimball gave Pacific the lead four minutes into the second half with a ball from 18 yards away the deflected off a Multnomah defender into the net.  Robert Nurmi gave the Boxers a key insurance goal in the 63rd minute with a half volley from 11 yards out.

Pacific took 18 shots in the game to six for Multnomah, including a 9-to-3 advantage in shots on goal.  Favila and Zack Woods led the Lions with two shots apiece, with one on goal each.  Kimball took five shots to lead the Boxers, with four on target.  Manuel Guillermo-Olivares made six saves for the Lions, while Leyton Thommasen earned the win for the Boxers with a pair of saves.

Multnomah dropped to 2-2 after starting the season with two straight wins, while Pacific improved to 3-1 with its third consecutive victory.

Quoting Coach Tom Stephens: "With our top scorer (Hayden Smedley) out with an injury and some others banged up, I thought we played perhaps our best all-around game so far … Our offensive passing was the best it has been; we just didn't finish our opportunities … We are getting better game by game, and that's a positive we'll take into the start of conference play next weekend … Pacific's probably the best team we've seen in our pre-conference schedule and we held our own; their first two goals were actually deflected goals."

Next: Multnomah opens Cascade Collegiate Conference play Friday, hosting the University of Providence (Mont.), formerly the University of Great Falls.  Game time is 3:00 p.m. at Delta Park … Pacific goes to Whitworth University next Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. game to start Northwest Conference action.
