NORTHWEST 4, MULTNOMAH 0: Unusual Goals in 2nd Half Spark Eagles Past Lions

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – A pair of unusual goals in the second half enabled Northwest University (Wash.) to snap a scoreless deadlock and the Eagles added two more scores in the final 10 minutes to defeat the host Multnomah University Lions 4-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer match Friday night here at Delta Park.

Though the visiting Eagles held a 26-3 advantage in shots for the game, the Lions' defense bent but did not break throughout the first 60 minutes.  Northwest finally got on the board in the 61st minute when Alex Ballard hooked a corner kick to the mouth of the goal and just below the crossbar.  Multnomah keeper Manuel Guillermo-Olivares went high into the air to knock the ball down, but the deflection landed just inside the line to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

In the 75th minute, the Eagles scored again as Ribeiro Alves got loose for a long run straight toward the goal.  A Lions' defender running alongside Alves tried to make a steal but instead deflected the ball past Guillermo-Olivares, who was coming out to challenge the run, and into the net for an 'own goal'.

Alves notched the final two scores of the game in the 81st and 84th minutes, the first on a bullet from 20 yards out from the right corner of the box after a short run, and the second on a penalty kick into the left corner of the net.

Guillermo-Olivares had seven saves for Multnomah while Daniel Christenson earned the shutout for Northwest, making a pair of saves on shots by Noe Favila and Nicolas Mboungou.  Alves led the Eagles with nine shots.

Multnomah is now 2-9 overall and 0-7 in the CCC, while Northwest improved to 6-3-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

--- Quoting Coach Tom Stephens: "Northwest has been one of the top teams in the conference for a while and I thought we gave them all they could handle for the first 60 minutes.  They got a couple of freaky goals to finally take the lead and it's hard to come back in soccer like that.  We're a young team that's just riding a fine line right now and can't seem to catch a break, but I like the way this group is coming together, learning to work as a team, and gives a hard effort every time out."

--- Next: Multnomah hosts Evergreen State College Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at Delta Park in a conference match … Northwest is at Walla Walla University Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. CCC contest.
