Box Score COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Ending the 2017 season with their second-highest scoring game of the year, the Multnomah University Lions were unable to parlay that into a win as the host Walla Walla University Wolves prevailed 5-4 in overtime in a Cascade Collegiate Conference men's soccer match Saturday night here at the WWU Soccer Complex.
Multnomah struck first three-and-a-half minutes into the game as
Travis Gardner rebounded a deflected save by Walla Walla keeper Tomcho Kohl and put it back in. The Wolves knotted it six minutes later as Anibal Castillo deflecting a clearing kick by Lions' goalie
Manuel Guillermo-Olivares into the net.
Hayden Smedley gave Multnomah another lead in the 37
th minute with a penalty kick goal, but again the Wolves responded with an equalizer, Diego Chavez scoring from the left side of the box to the right corner in the 41
st minute. The game stood at 2-2 into the intermission.
Emmett Semple gave Walla Walla a 4-2 lead with a pair of goals to open the second half, scoring in the 46
th and 57
th minutes with assists from Andrew Nye and Zac Christensen. The Lions battled back quickly,
Noe Favila scoring unassisted inside the right post in the 58
th minute and then assisting
Nicolas Mboungou's tying goal from the right into the left corner of the net in the 68
th minute.
Walla Walla got its 'golden goal' 4:52 into the overtime, initiated on an indirect free kick after a Multnomah foul. The ball was centered by Christensen to Damien Dennis, who tapped the ball in for the winner.
The game was an offensive slugfest as Multnomah took 32 shots, 18 on goal, while Walla Walla shot 28 times, also with 18 on target. Smedley and Jose de la Torre had five shots each for Multnomah, while Aaron Martinez led Walla Walla with seven attempts. Guillermo-Olivares made 13 saves and Kohl 14. It was also a rough game as the Wolves were whistled for 24 fouls and the Lions for 23. Six yellow cards were handed out to Multnomah players and three to Walla Walla players.
The Lions end the season 2-15 overall, dropping 15 straight after winning their opening two matches, and 0-13 in the CCC, while the Wolves finish at 1-13 overall and 1-12 in the conference. Neither team made the eight-team CCC Tournament field which was announced late Saturday night.
