Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – A 13-0 run over a two-and-a-half minute span in the first half enabled California State University-Maritime to build a 12-point lead, and the host Multnomah University Lions could get no closer than six the rest of the way in an 89-79 loss to the Keelhaulers in non-conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon here at Lytle Gym.
The first 12 minutes of the game saw five ties and seven lead changes. Maritime took a 13-9 lead on a layup by John McMillan, but Multnomah reeled off nine unanswered points on a three-pointer by
Jon Viles, a traditional three-point play by Max Upchurch, and a long-distance three by Upchurch to build an 18-13 advantage. An 11-2 run then gave the Keelhaulers another four-point lead before the Lions rallied and took their final lead of the game at 27-26 on a layup by Trent Baker with 8:48 left in the period.
Evan Madill's basket at 7:54 put Maritime ahead for good, and they added 11 more points in a row, capped by back-to-back threes by Kaden Young, to lead 39-27 with 5:26 to go. A pair of free throws by Upchurch brought the Lions within six at 41-35 with 1:36 left, but that was as close as they would get.
After taking a 48-38 lead into the break, the 'Haulers extended their lead to as much as 18 points twice, the last at 65-47 on a jumper and free throw by Josh Hauser with 14:32 left in the game. Multnomah battled back to get within eight five times, the last at 82-74 on a Ben Grandle layup with 2:58 to go, but each time the Keelhaulers were able to score and keep the hosts at bay until the clock expired.
--- By the Numbers: Darius Redrick led all scorers with 16 points for the Lions, Upchurch and Trey Fountain contributed 13, and Grandle had his second straight double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Fountain handed out six assists and Brett Blackstock made three steals, both game highs.
Phil Randles paced the Keelhaulers with 15 points, with help from Mike Meserole's 14 and 11 each from Young and Hauser. Zavier Lucero pulled down eight boards, and Daniel Solis passed out five assists.
Multnomah dropped to 0-2, while Cal State Maritime remained perfect at 3-0.
