PORTLAND, Ore. - Five Corban Warriors ended the night in double-digit scoring en route to their 100-96 overtime win over Multnomah. With their fourth loss in a row, the Lions dropped to 11-7 and 7-6 in conference play, while the visiting Warriors improved to 12-7 and 10-3 in CCC action.
"When you work so hard to crawl back and take the lead against a solid team, to then give a double-digit lead right back to them to eventually lose in overtime is really tough to handle," shared head coach Tayo Gem. "We needed to be more mentally tough down the stretch and have the ball bounce our way a couple of times. However, that's the best part about basketball, is that you get to do it all again tomorrow. We don't have time to be in the moment of this loss - we need to respond with positive energy and get back to winning."
Corban claimed the lead early on in the contest, extending their lead to 12 with just under eight minutes remaining in the half thanks to a free throw from Drayton Caoile. A three-pointer from sophomore guard
Noah Madsen in the final minute of the game cut the Warrior's lead to just three heading into the halftime break, trailing 39-42.
The Lions continued to chip away at Corban's lead, with the hosts finally taking control of the contest with just over nine minutes left to play. Multnomah extended their lead to 11 in the final five minutes of the contest on the back of a pair of free throws from senior guard
Kadeem Nelson, before seeing their lead vanish in the final minutes of regulation time, with the Warriors pushing the game to overtime thanks to a pair of free throws from Jared Franklin.
Despite all of Multnomah's effort, Corban took full control of the overtime period, maintaining the lead for all but two possessions.
Keilan Torkornoo pulled the Lions within three in the final 15 seconds of the game, but it wasn't enough to keep the visitors from clinching a four-point win, completing the season sweep over Multnomah.
Nelson had an impressive night for the Lions despite the loss, leading all scorers with a career-high 29 points, six rebounds and six assists. Madsen had arguably his best night in a Multnomah jersey tonight, tallying 18 points, six assists and three steals.
Noah McCord was a constant presence on both sides of the ball for Multnomah, pulling in 11 rebounds and four steals on the night. Torkornoo recorded 16 points on the night after shooting 50.0% from three-point range, while
Braedon Edison chipped in with 10 points off the bench for the Lions.
The Warriors were led by Spivey Word, who ended the night with a team-high 25 points. Caoile and Payton Meyers combined for 31 points off the bench for the visitors, while RJ Veliz ended the contest with 20 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Lions will hope to snap their losing streak with a win at home tomorrow, as they host Bushnell University at 5:00 pm to close out the weekend.
