Late-Game Heroics Propel Lions Past Beacons

PORTLAND, Ore. - Noah McCord's basket to beat the buzzer in overtime was all that separated Multnomah and Bushnell tonight, with the Lions coming out victorious with a narrow 86-84 win, snapping their four-game losing streak.

"We needed this win! Obviously it helps with our record as we continue to make a push for the postseason, but this was much bigger than simply adding another 'W' to the win column," shared head coach Tayo Gem following the victory. "We needed this win to help improve the morale in the locker room. Ever since the recent announcement of our school deciding to discontinue all undergrad programs and the entire athletic department starting in the fall, it continues to weigh heavily on not only my players, but the overall school community. Just for a brief moment, my guys forgot about all that noise and just got to enjoy playing basketball."

Multnomah jumped out to a commanding lead early in the contest, with junior guard/forward Braedon Edison extending their lead to 17 over the Beacons with just over 12 minutes remaining in the half. However, an 8-0 run from the visitors helped to cut Multnomah's lead down to just two in the final six minutes of the period, before Bushnell ultimately tied things up at 40 apiece heading into the halftime break thanks to a three-pointer from Squeeky Johnson in the final seconds of the half.

It was a tight and cagey affair to start the second half, with each team staying within at least nine points of each other as the half wore on. Multnomah did enough to stay in the game, as they struggled to get shots to fall their way for most of the half. The defining moment of the game came in the final second of regulation, as Keilan Torkornoo tied the game at 74-74 after beating the buzzer with a three-pointer, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Multnomah were again forced to try to seal the game off in the final seconds, with Luke Smith scoring a three-pointer with 29 seconds left in the period to tie the game at 84 apiece. This time, it was McCord who came to the rescue, getting on the end of a pass from Noah Madsen to secure the 86-84 victory, completing the season sweep over Bushnell.

McCord matched his career-highs of 21 points and 17 rebounds tonight, recording his fifth double-double of the year. Torkornoo and Alileyon Ford came up big on both sides of the ball tonight, with the pair recording 16 points and seven rebounds each. Edison ended the night with 12 points, and Madsen recorded a game-high eight assists.

The Lions will look to continue their winning ways with a pair of road games next weekend against Walla Walla University and Lewis-Clark State College.
