PORTLAND, Ore. - After suffering their biggest defeat of the season yesterday, Multnomah bounced with a 2-0 win over the University of Providence. The Lions now move to 4-4-2 overall, with a 2-2 record in conference. Providence ended the game with a 13-11 shot advantage over Multnomah, but were unable to find a way past
Jennifer Alvillar in goal, who recorded six saves while playing today's game with a broken hand.
"If we want a chance at the [conference] tournament this year, this is how we have to play from here on out," were the words that Head Coach Dalon Parker shared with his team following the final whistle. "These games will ultimately come down to who works harder, who wants it more, and that has to be us from here on out."
The first half was all Providence (5-2-1, 3-1-0 CCC), as they piled on the pressure for the first 45 minutes. The back line of Multnomah did a good job keeping the Argos' at bay, and the Lions were eventually able to break the deadlock when
Ashley Thomas connected with a cross from
Annika Rahf in the 53rd minute. The second half was a much more evenly matched contest between the two teams, with each squad recording seven shots against one another. Forward
Sydney Holmes grabbed the second and decisive goal of the game in the 75th minute, as she rocketed her shot towards goal, only for it to slip through the hands of Providence's goalkeeper.
Multnomah is back at home next weekend, as they look to pick up points against Northwest University and Evergreen State College on Friday, October 4th and Saturday, October 5th.
