PORTLAND, Ore. - In what was another tightly contested battle, Multnomah managed to power their way back into the win column with a 2-1 victory over the visiting University of Providence Argos. The Lions led the game with 18 shots to Providence's 13, with freshman goalkeeper
Johnny Hernandez coming up big for Multnomah on multiple occasions today, recording three crucial saves en route to today's win.
"We wanted it more than them today, and I'm proud of how we stayed disciplined for 90 minutes," shared Head Coach Dalon Parker following Multnomah's first win of the conference season. "We took advantage of the opportunities that came our way today; everyone stepped up and played their part, but this has to be the standard from here on out."
Multnomah made things uncomfortable for the Argos early in the game, as they initially broke the deadlock in the 7th minute through
Axcele Biteghe, who scored his second goal of the season thanks to a nicely timed cross from
Aghiles Lamara. The Lions continued to pressure Providence, eventually scoring their second goal of the game thanks to a perfectly executed free kick from
Isael Lopez in the 22nd minute, as his shot soared past the outstretched hands of Providence's goalkeeper.
The second half was a feisty battle, with seven yellow cards being recorded by the time the final whistle blew. Providence was able to chip away at Multnomah's lead with a goal of their own in the 74th minute through Jose Gonzalez, but Multnomah managed to fend off the Argos and secure their first win of the conference season. The Lions now sit in 12th place in the Cascade Conference standings, level on points with Oregon Tech, Warner Pacific, Evergreen State College, and Bushnell.
Multnomah will remain at home and play host to Northwest University and Evergreen State College next Friday, October 4th and Saturday, October 5th.
