PORTLAND, Ore. - In this season's first edition of the Multnomah vs Warner Pacific rivalry, a battle of cross-town foes whose campuses are just over two miles apart, the Lions came out on top winning 3-1.
"This first win feels great," said Head Coach Nerisa Laban, who was not only celebrating the team's first win of the season, but also her first win as head coach of the program. "We've been working hard in practice since those first two [conference] games, and that hard work paid off tonight. We definitely enjoyed that win, and we're hoping to keep this momentum going into our next games this coming weekend."
Multnomah (1-6, 1-2 CCC) fought hard in Set 1, with both teams starting the game strongly. Each team exchanged blows, with Warner (0-4, 0-3 CCC) holding an 11-9 advantage when it came to kills. However, thanks to the defensive efforts of senior libero
Lauren Porter, who ended the night with 22 digs, the Lions came out on top, narrowly winning the first set 26-24.
The tide turned towards the Knights in Set 2, who powered their way to a 25-20 win thanks in part to Elizabeth Reid and Tayah-Anne Toa, who led Warner in blocks on the night.
Despite this slight hiccup, Multnomah took over from then on and never looked back. Thanks to the deadly duo of
Aleya Baptiste and
Zoe Schuele, who ended the night with 14 kills and 17 assists respectively, the Lions would go on to win both Set 3 27-25, and Set 4 25-12.
The Lions are back at home this Friday and Saturday as they take on Walla Walla University and Lewis-Clark State College, before hitting the road for back-to-back weekends.
