SALEM, Ore. - Corban University's defensive excellence was enough to stifle the sharp-shooting Lions of Multnomah, who were held to a season-low 60 points and less than 30% shooting from the field in their first loss in CCC play, falling 60-72 against the Warriors.
"Although the result wasn't in our favor tonight, we needed this type of game to happen right now," said head coach Tayo Gem following the loss. "Coach Curry and I told the team that this game will be a great teaching tool of us, and that we can use it as motivation to continue to work at 'getting better at being us' as we have 12 days before our next game."
Multnomah (6-2, 2-1 CCC) began the game strongly with an 11-point run to start the contest, only for Corban to slowly chip away at the Lions' lead as the half continued. The Warriors finally claimed their first lead of the game with 3:12 remaining in the half thanks to a good three-pointer from Spivey Word, before Multnomah reclaimed the lead through
Darius Mason-Robertson with just over a minute left to play in the period. The hosts were ultimately able to regain the advantage heading into the halftime break, leading 34-33 after the Lions were unsuccessful in converting during the final 20 seconds of play.
The Lions clawed their way back into the lead during the early stages of the second half before Corban regained the lead, which they would go on to maintain for the duration of the contest. Despite the loss, Multnomah sits in sole position of 4th place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings, narrowly head of Bushnell, Eastern Oregon, Oregon Tech and Northwest University.
Junior forward
Noah McCord ended the contest with a game-high 21 points on nearly 50% from the field, as well as an additional five rebounds and a pair of steals. Fellow forward
Keilan Torkornoo secured yet another double-double with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while junior guard
Lareel Stewart chipped in with eight rebounds and two steals of his own in just his third appearance of the season.
Multnomah has 12 days off before their next weekend of conference play, where they will hit the road yet again to take on Northwest University and The Evergreen State College.
