Another weekend in the Cascade Conference brought another top ranked opponent for the Multnomah Lions, this time against the #1 ranked Eastern Oregon Mountaineers. The Lions were coming off a win on Tuesday against Warner Pacific University, while Eastern Oregon carried a 3-game winning streak into the match.
Â
The score remained close in the first set, as both teams played tough defense, and made scoring difficult for the other team's hitters. The Mountaineers capitalized on a string of errors by Multnomah and would close out the set 25-21.
Â
Eastern Oregon took that momentum into the second set and established an early lead behind the strong hitting of Cambee Scott (10 kills for the match) and the serving of Alexis McCurtey (4 aces for the match).
Â
The Lions keyed on the Mountaineer hitters in set 3, which saw a number of long, hard fought rallies that showcased the defensive abilities of both teams. Eastern Oregon was led by Hailey Arritola with 18 digs, while Lauren Porter added 17 for Multnomah.
Â
Ultimately, the top-ranked Mountaineers were the more efficient team and were able to win both the third set and the match, to improve to 23-2, 16-1 in conference.
Â
Danae Stokes led the Lions on offense with 9 kills, with Ashley Allred and Summer Martin each contributing 4.
The Multnomah Lions, the following day welcomed the visiting College of Idaho Coyotes to Lytle Gymnasium on Saturday, October 22, hoping to avenge a loss from earlier in the season and continue their streak of improved results against CCC competition.
Â
As in recent matches against ranked opponents Eastern Oregon and Corban, the Lions came out strong, and showed that they were not to be taken lightly. With setters Rachel Bailey and Harmony Hunter moving the ball around on offense, the Lions pushed the Coyotes to use a late-set timeout, but managed to take the set 25-23 from the Lions.
Â
In the second set, it was the Coyotes turn to come out strong, with hitters Janae Rayborn (12 kills) and Emily Vandenberg (10 kills) leading the way to a 25-18 victory.
Â
The Lions would not go quietly in the third set, and hung close with the Coyotes until a mid-set serving run created a lead for the Coyotes that they would not surrender, closing out 25-20, and taking the match in three straight sets.
Â
Lauren Porter led all defenders with 17 digs, with Janae Rayborn totalling 16 digs to add to her match-leading 12 kills. Summer Martin led the Lions with 8 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, with Alyssa Aubrey and Jocelynn Porter contributing 3 and 2 blocks respectively.
