Three Set Thriller

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Earning their second conference sweep, the Multnomah University Lions defeated the Walla Walla University Wolves on Friday, September 24th.

Set one was characterized by runs, with both teams making strides with multiple points in a row. The first few earned points by the Lions were momentum builders – with 2 blocks from the Jocelynn Porter and Jennifer Crago duo, and a kill from Porter as well. Porter was unable to be stopped on the right side, finishing with 4 kills in set one. Feeling the pressure, the Wolves finished out the set with a few unforced errors that gave the Lions the win, 25-16.

With extra points and excitement, set two finally finished after the Lions had the upper hand at 33-31. Multnomah had the lead by 6 at 13-6, but Walla Walla was not giving up. They remained steady and let the Lions make errors in order to get ahead. Once the teams hit 23-23, it was an absolute battle to the finish. The teams went point for point until the very end, but thanks to kills by Jennifer Crago and Kamaile Labanon the Lions had 3 points in a row to take the crazy win. Danae Stokes played out of her mind and finished with a grant total of 11 kills in set two alone.

Not letting the tough loss get them down, the Wolves came into the third set strong and had the lead for the first half. The two teams were tied up at 20's when a pair of kills Stokes and a few attack errors from the Wolves finished the set at 25-21.

Leading the Lions in the victory and holding nothing back was outside hitter Danae Stokes - who finished with a double-double after 18 kills and a .395 percentage, paired with 10 digs. Libero Alyssa Mehalovich led the team defensively with 14 digs on the match. Rachel Bailey dealt out all but 1 of the 39 assists for the Lions, and held the team together in the midst of crazy rallies. Hannah McPhetridge and Lauren Porter also had notable stats, tallying 4 and 3 aces respectively.
