Martin and Fountain Combine for 60 as MU Defeats EOU

PORTLAND, Ore. - On Saturday night the Lions were searching for a win to remain in the playoff hunt, and they got it against Eastern Oregon University with a final score of 92-84.

The Lions started off the night firing away from deep and knocking down 10 of their 20 three-point attempts in the first half on their way to a 56-43 halftime lead.

The Mountaineers climbed back into the game and continued to surge late in the second half. Brandon Porter banked in a two-point jump shot with 4:51 left in the game to cut the Multnomah lead to 79-78, and moments later Jarek Schetzle rebounded a missed floater and flipped it in for two points to give the Mountaineers their first lead of the second half 80-79 with 3:59 to play.

Justin Martin relentlessly attacked the basket when the Lions needed it most, and with 1:03 left drew a foul on Jamal Heckard to go to the line where he would knock down two free-throws and put MU up 86-79.

A couple possessions later, Max McCullough banked in a three-pointer with 28 seconds left to cut the Lion lead to 88-84, giving Eastern Oregon a reason to stay alive.

The Mountaineers had no choice but to foul Multnomah on the following possessions and Trey Fountain and Forrest Smith proceeded to make their free-throws, sealing a 92-84 victory for the Lions.

Justin Martin put the pressure on Mountaineer defenders all night long, scoring 43 points in a variety of ways including going 10-for-18 on two point shots. Trey Fountain was a major difference maker for MU as well, and he finished his night with 17 points and 6 assists. Stepan Zavydovskyy posted a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds while adding 3 blocks.

The Mountaineers were led by Max McCullough with 24 points, while Brandon Porter scored 20 of his own. Jarek Schetzle posted a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds.

"Outstanding team effort tonight. We shared the ball well and made two-pointers well, which is different for us. Trey and Forrest distributed the ball well, and Justin Martin did Justin Martin things for us all night long. Steph was huge for us in the paint, especially against Schetzle, and Jaeden (the birthday boy) made some clutch shots for us. All in all it was a very good night for us, and we did it against a very good and well coached team." - Head Coach Curt Bickley

Up next for the Lions is a road game at Northwest University on Friday, February 7th at 7:30 PM.
