La Grande, Ore. - The Lions (2-4, 0-1 CCC) kicked off their CCC schedule with a matchup against No. 17 Eastern Oregon University on Friday night, and the Mountaineers (7-4, 1-0 CCC) used their balanced scoring and depth to defeat the Lions 50-76 on Friday night in the Cascade Collegiate Conference season opener at Quinn Coliseum.
Erykah Campbell had a powerful double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, adding three blocks.
Dalila Rincan added 11 points with five rebounds, and
Rachelle Tau had 7 points of her own.
For the Mountaineers, Sophomore Beverly Slater led the offense with 14 points despite only playing 18 minutes. Junior Megan Still had 13 points and senior Rachel Fielder recorded 11.
The story of the game was that the Mountaineers found a way to score 48 points in the paint, while the Lions only scored 28. However, a bright spot for the Lions was their 21 points off the bench, and they will need that effort again as they continue through their tough conference schedule.
The Lions look to bounce back Saturday night in Caldwell, Idaho against the College of Idaho at 5:30 PM.
