WPU Pulls Away From Lions in Second Half 76-89

PORTLAND, Ore. - In their last conference game of 2019, the Multnomah University men's basketball team (6-6, 0-3 CCC) traveled to cross-town rival Warner Pacific in search of their first conference road win of the season. Warner Pacific (6-5, 2-1 CCC) had seven players score in double figures on the offensive side of the ball, and on defense they were prepared to do whatever it took to keep Justin Martin from repeating his 71 point performance of last season, including throwing multiple defenders at him, double teams, and playing full court denial.

In what seemed would be a 3-point shootout, the two teams launched a combined 42 3-point field goal attempts in just the first half alone. Jaeden Ingram had the hot hand early for the Lions, hitting three of his four 3-point shots withing the first seven minutes of play. Trey Fountain checked into the game and provided an instant spark for the Lions off the bench, scoring 9 of his 10 points before halftime. The Lions trailed 42-48 at half, but a few missed free throws and open three's were all that seperated them from leading.

The Lions came out with vengeance in the second half, going on a 7-4 run and closing the gap to 1 with the help of a Justin Martin 30-foot pull-up. As MU kept creeping closer and closer to regaining the lead, Warner Pac responded with a 12-0 run of their own to eventually bust the lead open to 22-points, the largest lead of the game with 4-and-a-half minutes remaining.

The Lions were Martin finished with a game-high 22 points and led five Lions in double-figures. Jaeden Ingram finished with 16 and 6, Stepan Zavydovskyy finished with 13 and 7 while Zach Richardson and Trey Fountain both finished with 10 points.

Warner Pacific was lead by a double-double from Kendal Watson who registered 10 points and 18 boards. JD Esters, Kadeem Strickland, and Kaleb Tompkins each scored 14 points. Miles Brown and Morris Bethea both added 13 points as well.

Up next for the Lions is a home matchup vs the Oregon Institute of Technology (10-1, 1-1 CCC) on Friday, January 3rd at 7:30 PM.
