Lions Edge Willamette in Five

PORTLAND – The Multnomah University volleyball team got back on the winning side of things as the Lions held on to defeat Willamette University in five sets (25-22, 25-21, 8-25, 16-25, 15-9) on Jim Skagen Court on Tuesday night.
 
 
THE BASICS:
Final: Willamette 2, Multnomah 3
Records: WU (5-6, 1-1 NWC), MU (2-12, 0-6 CCC)

GAME SUMMARY:
  • The Lions led for a majority of the first set before Willamette scored four straight points to take a 22-21 lead. MU answered back, scoring the final four points of the set to go up 1-0.
  • Tied 12-12 in set two, the Lions used a 7-3 run to pull away, holding on to the lead for the remainder of the set.
  • Willamete had some fight, holding off the sweep as they went on to win the third and fourth set to tie the match at 2 sets apiece.
  • In the final set, MU broke a 4-4 tie with an 8-2 run before winning the match with two straight aces by Marissa Rhodes.
 
KEY PERFORMERS:
  • Miranda Halverson led the Lions with 14 kills while Sydney Amundson tallied 13 kills and Taryn Frey added 10 kills off of 21 swings.
  • Rhodes collected 37 assists and Rachel Leshikar totaled 22 digs in the back row.
 
FROM THE COACH:
"Taryn and Miranda came out huge for us tonight in the front row, both with their hitting and blocking," said head coach Jenna Bouey. "Our defense and serve receive passing was key in the games that we won. I'm proud of this team tonight, they won together."

The Lions return to Cascade Conference play on Friday as they welcome in Walla Walla University at 3 p.m.
