Fast Start Not Enough to Beat Owls

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah University volleyball team had a strong start on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough as the Lions lost to Oregon Tech in four sets, 27-25, 20-25, 22-25, and 15-25 on Jim Skagen Court.
The Lions move to 5-7 overall on the year, 1-5 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference while the Owls improve to 6-6, 2-4 CCC.

How it Happened: The Lions needed a few extra points in the opening set of the night, taking down Oregon Tech 27-25 as both went back and forth in scoring.

Desperate to keep the winning streak alive against the Lions, Oregon Tech used a .378 hitting percentage in the second set to even the score. Down 6-2 early, the Lions battled back to tie the match 20-20 before the Owls notched the remaining five points of the set.

Oregon Tech earned a .257 attacking percentage as team while holding the Lions to a percentage of .125.

Both teams continued to battle in set three with neither one able to take a commanding lead. Tied 17-17 the Owls broke away using a 6-2 run before capitalizing on the final two points.

The Lions totaled 11 aces on the night, two shy of the season high.

Already holding an 8-6 advantage in the final set, the Owls used a 7-1 run to put the match out of reach for Multnomah.

By the Numbers: Freshman Hannah Antal surpassed her career high from a night ago, tallying a match high 14 kills on only 29 swings, for a hitting percentage of .379. She added four aces and seven digs. Adding to the MU offense was Patty Batoon with 11 kills while Miranda Halverson totaled 18 digs and Marissa Rhodes finished with 18 assists.

For the Owls, four players finished in double digits in kills, led by Bailey Nelson with 12. Bella Ross notched a match high 25 digs and Waverly Green ended with a total of 42 assists.

From the Coach: "We just didn't seem to have the mental or physical energy tonight to compete well and win," said head coach Jenna Bouey. "Antal had another stellar night at the net and serving. OIT came to win and played us well.

Coming up Next: The Lions hit the road next week, as they travel to face College of Idaho on Friday and Eastern Oregon on Saturday.
