Lions Close Out Non-Conference Play with 2-1 Loss to Whitman

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Multnomah University men's soccer team hit a road block against Whitman College on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 in the final non-conference game of the season.

The Lions (3-1) struggled stopping the offense of Whitman as the hosts totaled 29 shots, with eight landing on target. MU finished with nine shots, including three shots on goal.

"We played a very strong team today. The guys played well but came up a bit short," said head coach Tom Stephens. "Every guy got in the game and all played really hard and I can't ask for more than that.

Whitman opened up the scoring in the first half when Eric Conte headed a ball from David Chavarin in the 33rd minute to take a 1-0 lead.

MU keeper Many Guillermo improved his season average of saves per game, recording six saves, allowing two goals for the first time this season.

Whitman added to their lead late in the second half as Erik Neilson found the back of the net in the 83rd.

Just over a minute later, the Lions got on the scoreboard when Zach Barker scored his first goal of the year after a pass from Danny Mangione.

"This was a good prep for what will only get harder as we begin conference play next week."

The Lions return home next weekend for the first time since August 15, when they open Cascade Conference play against Oregon Tech on Friday, September 16.
