Lions Fall in Final CCC Home Game of the Season, Lose 78-61 to Corban

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah University women's basketball team fell in the final Cascade Collegiate Conference home game of the season, losing the Corban University 78-61 on Jim Skagen Court on Saturday night.

The Warriors, who have already clinched a spot in the conference postseason tournament, move to 16-11 overall on the year and 11-7 in CCC play while Multnomah drops to 4-22, 2-16 CCC.

Junior Miranda Schmillen started off the scoring for MU, hitting a three before finishing the first quarter with five points, helping the Lions to a 19-18 advantage after the opening period.

Schmillen ended with a team high 18 points and added eight rebounds while Lacie Kamper finished with 11 points and grabbed seven boards. Sophomore Valerie Wakefield contributed a team high six assists with five points and Bethany George added seven points and six rebounds.

Neither team could really find an edge during the first half as the Warriors claimed a 35-31 lead at the half.

"Corban scored the ball very well in the second half. We struggled to get stops at times and against a team who is on a hot streak, it's tough to stay in it," said head coach Tim Bieri. "Either way, I am very pleased with the way we were able to score in double digits each quarter and it shows how we continue to get better each day."

Jade Lowery led the Warriors with a game high 23 points while Sadie Pilgeram, Julia Young and Payton Wilcox each added 14 points.

Corban finally began to pull away in the third quarter after a layup followed by a free throw by Annie Owen made it 48-37 in favor of the Warriors. As MU tried to cut into the lead, a late bucket by Young kept the lead in double digits, 57-47, heading into the last quarter.

The Warriors used a 49 field goal percentage on the night to defeat the Lions 78-61 and complete the season sweep.

The Lions will travel for their final two conference games of the year as they prepare to face Northwest and Evergreen next weekend.
