PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah University men's basketball team set a NAIA national record for three-pointers attempted in a single game, but couldn't overcome the offense of Corban as the Lions lost 124-89 at home on Saturday night to close out the Cascade Collegiate Conference home schedule.
The Lions totaled 73 shots from downtown to claim the record from Wisconsin-Parkside who hit 70 3-pointers against Lakeland in 1989.
MU's 22 made three-pointers also ties a Cascade Conference record.
"In our last six games we tried to play faster to see if this style will work for us in the future, and as we evaluate our talent we want to find out what kind of outside shooters we have in the process," said head coach
Curt Bickley.
Senior guard
Blake Updike led the Lions with 22 points, making five threes followed by
Ben Grandle with 15 points,
Thomas Simien with 14 points and
Mikey Chown with 12 points.
Jordan Paris added nine points and collected a team high 11 rebounds.
"It's fun to play fast like this but on the back end of a double head I don't think this is the smartest way to play, but these are the questions we are looking to find answers for our program," continued Bickley.
The Warriors finished with six players in double figures, led by A.J. Monterossi who totaled 25 points off of 12-of-14 shooting. Following him was Cyrus Ward with 19 points and Joel Johnson with 18 points.
With the score at 52-51 with 5:29 on the clock, Corban closed out the first half of play on a 22-3 run to break away from the Lions and secure the lead for the rest of the night. The Warriors finished with a 63 shooting percentage and held a 56-37 rebounding advantage over MU.
Corban tallied their largest lead of the night, 41 points, after a layup by Adam Moore made it 110-69 with 5:09 to play.
The Lions will return to action next week when they face Portland Bible on Tuesday before closing out the final two CCC games of the year at Northwest and Evergreen over the weekend.
