PORTLAND, Ore. – The
Multnomah University women's basketball team started their 2016-17 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play in impressive fashion as they sprinted past their cross-town competitors at Warner Pacific College to earn an 84-68 victory.
The Lions were led by senior guard,
Miranda Schmillen, who scored a game high 32 points, 18 of which came in the first half. Schmillen shot an impressive 12-16 from the field, including draining 4 threes. Following Schmillen's long range lead were
Ana Wakefield who scored 12 points off of 4 threes, and
Sadie Jenks who added 11 points while draining 3 threes of her own. Multnomah shot 43.3% from behind the arch on the night.
Schmillen, along with
Lacie Kamper and
Milan Woods led the Lions to win the rebounding battle as they each pulled down 7 respective boards of their team's 47 total rebounds, compared to WPC's 43.
The Lions made 13 three's on the night (matching the program best) and also set three program records including:
1. First win over WPC
2. Most team assists (19)
3. Most points scored by an individual (Schmillen, 32)
The Lions took their first lead of the night off of a three by Schmillen two minutes into the game and never relinquished the lead for the rest of the contest. The Lady Knights from WPC provided a balanced attack with four of their five starters putting up double digits with Micaela Bitanga leading the way with 16.
This weekend continues with two more Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) contests for Multnomah who will travel north to take on Evergreen State on Friday and Northwest University on Saturday, both at 5:30 p.m.
