PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah University women's basketball team played one of their best quarters of basketball this year, but it wasn't enough to hold off Cascade Collegiate Conference opponent Oregon Tech as they fall to the Owls 68-44 on Friday night on Jim Skagen Court.
The Lions move to 4-17 overall on the season and 2-11 in the Cascade Conference while the Owls keep their second place spot in the standings, improving to 17-5, 11-2 CCC.
Oregon Tech started the game strong, earning a 9-0 start in the first quarter. Sophomore guard
Valerie Wakefield ended the scoring run by the Owls, hitting a three for MU's first points of the night.
Down 13-5 in the middle of the first quarter, the Lions put together an incredible 12-2 run take take a 17-15 advantage heading into the second quarter. Senior guard
Lexie Govert scored seven of her team high 13 points during the run.
Oregon Tech used a field goal percentage of 50 percent on the night to take control during the second quarter and eventually secure the season sweep of the Lions.
Govert added four steals for MU against OIT while Wakefield added seven points and
Katherine Edmonds finished with five points and a team high eight rebounds.
"It was a big deal for us to be able to take 2 of 4 quarters against such a great team," said head coach
Tim Bieri. "We are still working toward a complete and consistent performance – but overall this was a very solid night for our young team."
Ashleigh Vandenbrink led the Owls with 14 points while Karly LeVeque and Megan Whetstone both recorded 10 points. Oregon Tech held advantages over the Lions in rebounding, 40 compared to MU's 31, and it turnovers, forcing 18 to MU's 12.
The Lions stay at home tomorrow night as they host CCC standings leader Southern Oregon at 5:30 p.m. on Jim Skagen Court.
