PORTLAND, Ore. – With a chance to win it late, the Multnomah University men's basketball team fell just short against visiting Walla Walla University, losing 82-80 on Saturday night on Jim Skagen Court.
The loss drops the Lions to 4-15 overall on the year and 1-10 in the Cascade Conference. The Wolves earned their first ever win as members of the CCC and sit on a record of 3-17, 1-11 CCC.
With only three seconds left to play in regulation, MU's
Blake Updike found a look that would put his team a head but just missed, giving Walla Walla the victory.
Updike finished the night with 30 points and eight rebounds while going 11-of-18 from the field. Following him was
Ben Grandle who hit six three-pointers to finish with 18 points while
Jason Wyncoop notched 13 points.
"Great game between two evenly match teams," said MU head coach
Curt Bickley. "We got a great look by our best shooter to win, ball just didn't go in. Walla Walla did a great job of finishing when they needed to late, congrats to them."
The Wolves were led offensively by Ryan Spady who tallied a double-double with a game high 32 points and totaling 10 rebounds. Chad Torkelsen ended the night with 14 points while Ethan Osias finished with nine points and five rebounds. Walla Walla shot 51 percent from the field in the game, just edging out MU's 47 percent.
Down by five points with 4:09 left in the second half, Walla Walla used a 7-0 run to steal back the lead before Spady completed an and one to put his team up for good.
The Lions will travel to cross town rival Warner Pacific on Tuesday before returning home to host Oregon and Southern Oregon starting on Friday.
