Lions End Road Trip with Three Set Loss to OIT

Klamath Falls, Ore. – Despite a strong start in set one, the Multnomah University volleyball team couldn't stay with Oregon Tech, losing in straight sets 25-21, 25-9, 25-12 on the road in Klamath Falls, Ore., on Saturday night.

The first Cascade Collegiate Conference season continues to be a difficult one as the Lions fall to 1-6, 0-6 CCC on the year. The Owls will hold on to the third place spot in the CCC standings as they improve to 9-3, 4-2 CCC.

How it Happened: The Lions came out on fire to open the first set. After sharing points back and forth, MU used a 5-2 run to take their largest lead of the night 11-7. Seven first set errors by the Multnomah kept OIT in the match as the Owls took their first lead of the night 18-17. MU could not recover from OIT's run, falling behind in set one, 25-21.

Set two started off much like the first one did with each team scoring and no one really taking control. With a score of 7-6 in favor of the Owls, OIT brought the set out of reach for the Lions scoring on 11 straight points to take a commanding 18-6 lead.

MU's night did not get better as OIT continued to put together streaks of three or more straight points on four different occasions in the third and final set.

By the Numbers: Freshman Marissa Rhodes tallied a team high in both assists (14) and digs coming up with eight total. Leading the attack for the Lions was sophomore Patty Batoon and freshman Miranda Halverson, who had seven and five kills respectively. Junior Miranda Schmillen added three serves aces and six digs on the night.

Top performers for the Owls included setter Waverly Green who orchestrated the offense for OIT, coming up with 27 assists. Whitney Webster and Bailey Nelson each had eight kills in the match.

Coming Up Next: The Lions have completed their first road trips and look forward to returning to their home court next weekend as they host College of Idaho on Friday, Sep. 25, followed by Eastern Oregon on Saturday.
