Turnovers Plague Lions in 90-73 Loss to Northwest

PORLTLAND, Ore. – Blake Updike recorded his second consecutive 30-point night, but it wasn't enough to get past Northwest University as the Lions fall 90-73 in the final Cascade Conference game of the weekend on Saturday night on Jim Skagen Court.

The Lions are still seeking their first ever CCC win as the move to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the conference while Northwest improved to 5-6, 1-2 CCC.

How it Happened: MU's Trever Cooley started the night off for the Lions, recording all eight of his points in the opening 10 minutes and the first five points of the night for MU.

The Lions built their largest lead of the night early in the first half after a layup by Jordan Paris made it 13-7 with 16:21 on the clock.

Northwest shot well throughout the game, finishing the night at 44.6 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from deep as they took back the lead to end the first half with a 44-38 advantage.

MU battled back in the opening play of the second half, gaining the lead 54-53 before a three-pointer by Jessie Norton put the Eagles ahead for the remainder of the night.

As they Lions worked to remain in the game, errors plagued MU in the final minutes, losing the turnover ratio, 19-7, allowing the Eagles 14 points off turnovers.

With just over six minutes remaining in the game, the Eagles went on their largest run, 12-0 to put the game out of reach for the Lions before winning 90-73 for their first CCC win of the season.

Key Performers: Updike led the Lions in scoring, finishing the night 10-19 from the floor while hitting six threes as Paris added 14 points along with seven rebounds. Ezekiel Martin added nine points off of 4-of-6 shooting.

For the Eagles, five different players finished in double figures in points with Ben Tucakovic leading with 24 points and 10 rebounds followed by Dak Shagren with 19 points and Michael Dupree with 13 points.

From the Coach: "It was a little like last night were we competed for the first 32 minutes but this time down the stretch turnovers and missed free throws, combined with Northwest's shooting, put us in a whole we couldn't come back from," said head coach Curt Bickley. "Great effort by Updike again and we shot a great percentage from three-point but it just wasn't enough."

Coming up Next: The Lions will take a break from conference play next week as they host NCAA Division III Linfield College on Saturday on Jim Skagen Court.
