CALDWELL, Idaho - Multnomah did all they could to pull off the upset on the road tonight, but were ultimately unsuccessful in their attempt, with College of Idaho securing a 98-88 win. With the result, the Lions dropped to 11-5 and 7-4 in conference play, while the Yotes improved to 15-2 on the year to remain atop the Cascade Conference standings.
Head coach Tayo Gem commended his side for how they performed despite the loss. "When we are playing against a solid national tournament team, especially the number five team in the country, it's hard to dig ourselves out of a hole being down 18-4 to start the game. However, after that we competed and made it a game. We continue to have things we need to work on, but again we showed tremendous growth and mental toughness. We look forward to seeing them again!"
The Yotes led by as much as 14 in the first half, with Multnomah having to come from behind early in the game. A layup from sophomore guard
Noah Madsen cut the deficit to just one point with just over five minutes remaining in the half, but the hosts would tac on a few more before the end of the period, holding a slim 49-40 lead over Multnomah heading into the halftime break.
It was more of the same from both teams at the start of the second half, but it was the Yotes who ultimately began to pull away about halfway through the period. COI increased their lead to 25 with just over seven minutes remaining in the contest thanks to a free throw from Paul Wilson, and despite Multnomah's best efforts, they were unable to get any sort of foothold on the game. The Lions were able to pull within eight in the last minute of the game, but it was too little too late, as the visitors would go on to suffer a 10-point loss on the road.
Sophomore forward
Keilan Torkornoo had yet another impressive performance despite the loss, recording a game-high 20 points after going 7-for-14 from the field and 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
Marje Windfield tallied 16 points, three assists and a pair of steals, while
Alileyon Ford chipped in with 15 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Lions. Junior forward
Noah McCord recorded a double-double on the night with 12 points and team-high 12 rebounds, while Madsen and
Braedon Edison each ended the night with 10 points.
The Lions will look to bounce back tomorrow as they close out the weekend against Eastern Oregon University.
