Lions Earn First Win of the Season

PORTLAND, Ore. - Following five consecutive hard-fought losses, Multnomah earned their first win of the season with a dominant 68-47 victory over NCAA Division III side Lewis & Clark College. The Lions were led by freshman guard Jersey Huerta, whose 28-point night helped Multnomah improve to 1-4 on the year.

"This win is exactly what we needed with conference starting next week, and I'm really proud of how all the girls performed tonight," shared head coach Reid Takatsuka. "We've moved on from those previous losses, and we want to keep this momentum going as we head into Warner, Bushnell and Corban on the road next week."

Huerta recorded eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals to go along with her game-high 28 points. Fellow freshman Ellie Robertson ended the night with a double-double, tallying 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior Makayla Torkornoo had another impressive night for the Lions, as she picked up 14 points, four rebounds, and dished out three assists.

Senior forward Gracie Browning came up big defensively for Multnomah tonight with nine rebounds and two steals, while junior forward Leiah Naeata was a bright spark off the bench, dishing out a game-high four assists.

The first half was a tightly-contested affair, with Multnomah fighting their way to a 30-26 lead heading into the halftime interval. The second half was where the Lions found their shooting touch, particularly from three-point range. Huerta scored 10 of her 28 points to help Multnomah outscore the Pioneers 18-8 in the third quarter and build a 48-34 advantage.

It was all Multnomah from then on, as the Lions maintained their momentum and did not let the Pioneer get any closer than 13 points to secure the victory.

The Lions will be back in action on Saturday night, as they hit the road again to take on Willamette University.
