MU Loses in Sweep to Northwest

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah University volleyball team couldn't overcome the mistakes as Northwest swept the Lions (11-25,12-25,20-25) on Saturday night in Jim Skagen Court.

MU got off 83 attacks in the match but could only convert 25 kills as they fall to 0-2, 0-2 CCC, on the season. The Eagles (6-2, 2-0 CCC) finished with a .321 attacking percentage led by sophomore middle blocker Mattie Jo Johnson who tallied 11 kills.

Johnson also finished with an attacking percentage of .917, converting on 11 of 12 attempts.

Leading the way for the Lions was sophomore outside hitter Patty Batoon (10 kills) followed by sophomore outsider Kayti Nelson who totaled three kills and a team high .222 attack percentage.

"Nelson did a great job placing balls in the front row and had some key digs in the back row for us" said head coach Jenna Bouey, "Batoon hit well from the back row but in the end it just wasn't enough to overcome the amount of unforced errors."

MU took the first point in the opening set before the Eagles answered with five straight points. With the score at 5-3 in favor of Northwest, the Eagles managed an 8-0 run to take over set one.

Sophomore defensive specialist Hannah Tangeman recorded seven digs for the Lions along with Nelson, while junior middle Kathrynn Gerard and freshman libero Devyn Sigurdson each had six digs.

In set two, the Lions and the Eagles shared points at the beginning before and error by Sigurdson and two straight kills by Johnson gave Northwest the lead for the remainder of the set.

Recording a match high in assists for MU was freshman setter Marissa Rhodes who totaled 23, extending her 20 plus assist streak to three matches.

MU opened what would be the final set with the first point but followed up with four errors and an ace by the Eagles' Amanda Waterman.

Multnomah improved each set in both attacking percentage and points, totaling 20 in the third set but allowed 20 errors attacking compared to Northwest's six errors.

The Lions take a break from conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 8, to play New Hope Christian in Eugene, Ore.
