Evergreen Slips Past Lions to Win 82-76

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah University women's basketball team had another thrilling Cascade Collegiate Conference game, falling to The Evergreen State College 82-76 on Friday night on Jim Skagen Court.

In a game that totaled 20 three-pointers, MU finished the night with 13 but couldn't find a way to hold on to the lead, dropping their record to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in conference. Evergreen gets their first win of the season as they improve to 1-3, 1-1 CCC.

MU's Sadie Jenks finished with a career high 18-points, hitting 6-of-11 from behind the arc to keep her team alive, while Valerie Wakefield added 3-of-4 from deep, totaling 14 points.

The Lion's held their largest lead of the opening quarter at 19-14 with 1:59 left on the clock before heading into the second quarter of play with the score 21-19 in favor of MU.

"Once again I was very proud of the effort of the girls tonight. Evergreen shot the ball very well and they were able to come up with some key stops" said head coach Tim Bieri. "We created a lot of great opportunities for ourselves, but we also gave away a few too many opportunities as well."

Jonelle Staveland ended the evening with a game high 22-points which included six three-pointers while Uriah Thomas and Gabi Fenumaia added 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Geoducks took their first lead since the 4:46 mark of the first quarter after a layup by Thomas made it 25-24 just over three minutes into the second. The rest of the quarter went to Evergreen as they reached an 11-point lead before heading into halftime with a 45-37 advantage.

Evergreen took their largest lead of the night with just under a minute to go in the third quarter after two free throws by Irene Moore gave them a 15-point lead, 60-45.

MU's Lacie Kamper finished just short of her third double-double, finishing with 14 points and nine rebounds while Miranda Schmillen added 11 points of her own.

The Lions began the final quarter of play on a 20-10 run to bring the game to within one point, 70-69. For every three that MU found, the Geoducks found a way to respond as they closed out the final quarter winning 82-76.

"I am very confident in our group and we will make a few adjustments on some little things as we look forward to hosting Northwest tomorrow."
