Northwest Scores Four in Second Half to Defeat MU 5-0

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Multnomah University men's soccer team played one the their best halves of the season but breaks in the second half defense led to Northwest University earning a 5-0 win at Portland Christian on Saturday.

The loss moves the Lions further down in the standings falling to 0-9 on the season, 0-6 in the Cascade Collegiate conference. The Eagles move to .500 on their season sitting at a 5-5 overall record and move to 3-2 in conference action.

What started out as a close match, turned heavily in favor of Northwest as they put together four second half goals to secure the win.

How it Happened: Northwest beat the Lions defense early in the first half when Kyle Zimmerman took an unassisted shot that ricocheted off the post and landed in the net just under eight minutes into the game.

That would be the only ball that landed in the Eagles favor in the first half as MU defended against 14 total shots in the opening half while only allowing that one goal. MU tried to get something going offensively, getting off two shots one of which ended in a save by NU's Daniel Christenson.

As the second half started, it wasn't too long before Northwest took over scoring two back to back goals in the 50th minute and the 51st minute to put the game out of reach for the Lions. The Eagles got off 19 more shots in the second half including two additional goals in the 74th minute and late in the 89th.

By the Numbers: Multnomah got off only five shots in the match, compared to Northwest's 33. Lions Keeper Manny Guillermo had one of his best games tallying a match high 10 saves, while Juan Candido led in shots attempted with two, both of which landed wide of the net.

Four different Eagles ended with a goal while Zimmeran led the way with five shots followed by Odason Pelogi who totaled four shots and one goal. NU's two other goals came from Brendon Wheeler and Trent Siedenburg.

From the Coach: "I'm very proud of the way the guys played tonight., we get better with every game," said head coach Tom Stephens, "Northwest is a great team."

Coming up next: The Lions will continue their play at home next week as they welcome in Eastern Oregon on Friday at Madison High School while Northwest will return home to play host to Oregon Tech.
